Interesting Perhaps for your coastal Georgia and historic Savannah Georgia travels? KNOWN LOCALLY AS SAVANNAH'S "MERCHANT PRINCE" AT AGE 26, WILLIAM SCARBROUGH [SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SPELLING FROM SCARBOROUGH], PRESIDENT OF THE SAVANNAH STEAMSHIP COMPANY -- THE FIRM WHICH BUILT THE FIRST STEAMSHIP TO CROSS THE ATLANTIC, THE SS SAVANNAH -- AND HIS WIFE JULIA WERE THE TOAST OF SAVANNAH. ACCORDING TO GEORGIA HISTORICAL SOCIETY ARCHIVES, WILLIAM SCARBROUGH WAS THE SON OF LUCY AND WILLIAM SCARBROUGH, A NORTH CAROLINA SHIPBUILDER AND TRADER WHO SETTLED IN CHARLESTON. BORN IN PASQUOTANK COUNTY, NC, ON FEBRUARY 18, 1776, WILLIAM SERVED A COMMERCIAL APPRENTICESHIP UNDER SEVERIN ERICHSON IN DENMARK, ENGLAND, GERMANY AND SPAIN AND CAME TO SAVANNAH IN 1802. HE AND JULIA BERNARD WERE MARRIED ON APRIL 18, 1805, AND HAD 10 CHILDREN TO INCLUDE THREE SONS ALL NAMED WILLIAM.
